From the guys who brought you the beloved musical, The Fantasticks, this musical gem celebrates a lifetime of marriage over 50 years. You'll fall in love all over again as you hear familiar songs including "My Cup Runneth Over," "Flaming Agnes," and "Someone Needs Me." Originally produced in 1966, in the midst of the Age of Aquarius, and a country in turmoil, this simple, moving and funny little musical featuring Mary Martin and Robert Preston turned into the Broadway musical highlight of the decade. A timeless musical treasure.

Director's Notes

August 14, 1945 marked the end of hostilities between the Allied and Axis Powers in the Pacific – the effective end to the Second World War. In Times Square that day, Alfred Eisenstaedt captured an image of celebration, of promise, and of romance that would run in Life Magazine that month. The image, of a nurse in white dipped back in the arms of a sailor, would stay with America for generations to follow. In a very real way, that moment became a new beginning for our country.

A new beginning – filled with celebration, promise, and romance… what was captured in that one image then is reflected still today each time two people turn to one another with hope in their hearts and echo the two words in the title of tonight's musical. But the simplicity of that vow is deceptive at best, for it takes more than just love to sustain that promise – it takes devotion, commitment, and sacrifice.

For those who lived firsthand through the decades that followed that golden moment in Times Square, you know that it also took those three things to fulfill the promise our country had made to itself. That synchronicity is part of what inspired us in this production to use that fleeting moment Eisenstaedt captured as the launching pad from which the rest of our story could be told.

The beauty of Agnes and Michael's journey is that as they encounter the greatest gifts and greatest challenges of marriage, they encounter each moment for the first time with each other. They find themselves through each other – and as sometimes happens as well, they lose themselves through each other. And that's part of the beauty of being in love.

This story, like any great love story, is universal. So whether it be in its celebration, its promise, and its romance, or in its devotion, its commitment, and its sacrifice, I hope that you too may touch that beauty for a few moments here at the theatre today. Don't be surprised if you find yourself for a few moments in this story. And don't be afraid if you also happen to lose yourself in it as well.

Thank you for joining us for I Do! I Do! Please enjoy the show.
